Ayurveda, known as Yoga’s sister science, offers an array of practices for radiant optimal wellness.

The Ginger Pickle is a highly prized, incredibly effective, and taste bud tingling recipe that increases digestive agni, (agni translates to fire).  Because of this, it is also a fabulous boost to the immune system.

It’s a ‘trick’ used by brides to help them fit into their dress on their special day…

but it’s also amazingly beneficial to three of your body’s systems.

Have you noticed that when you’re coming down with something,

  • your digestion gets sluggish,
  • you feel full and bloated,
  • and you can’t think as clearly?

That’s because your digestive system, your immune system, and your nervous system rely on each other.

Think of it this way, they are the 3 wheels on your proverbial tricycle.

If one of the wheels hits a hard bump and bends, it becomes wobbly and the other 2 wheels have to work double time to keep you moving.

Adding the Ginger Pickle into your daily or weekly regimen will help you stay healthier because you are digesting better.

It’s simple…

Eat it before meals and enjoy better digestion, less gas and bloating, and improved mental alertness.

  • Great to boost immunity when you’ve been around sick people
  • Awesome to warm you up and tame your tummy when you need that extra soothing.
  • Perfect when on a cleanse or detox.
  • A tonic for those with chronic dry mouth.

Ayurveda Digestive

INGREDIENTS

  • Honey – the best you can get
  • Ginger Root – organic if possible, otherwise peel it before you grate it
  • Lemon – squeeze the juice
  • Salt – I suggest Gray Sea Salt for most people

Optional Supportive Additions

  • Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil – 1-2 drops (supports healthy metabolism)
  • Lime Essential Oil – 1-2 drops (supports the immune system)
  • Lemon Essential Oil – 1-2 drops (aids cleansing)

DIRECTIONS

Grate a 2 inch piece of ginger root into a glass bowl.

Add

pinch to 1/4 tsp of gray sea salt

juice of one lemon

drizzle of honey

essential oils to taste

Stir

Now eat it…

Take 1 teaspoon before your meal(s) to increase your digestive fire.  Save the rest for later in the day.

Why this works…

There are several elements that make this an effective natural digestive aid.

  • First there is the 5 elements of taste that help your mouth produce saliva. Saliva is rich in enzymes that begin the digestive process in the mouth.
  • Second, ginger is renown for it digestive properties that aid all three parts of the digest system, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.
  • Third, an active digestive system is key to greater energy because the system can operate more efficiently.
  • Forth, the optional addition of essential oils adds supportive chemical properties that are not present in the juice of the the lemon or ginger root.

I adapted my Essential Ginger Pickle recipe from an ancient recipe you can find on Maharishi Ayurveda.

It’s a great recipe to start with for those of you that don’t have quality, safe to ingest essential oils yet. Want to learn about the oils I use and trust? Send me an email.

Shockingly, for most Westerners, the most toxic part of our day is before we eat breakfast, during our morning shower.

Slide1

Pin me!

When we shower, we use municipal water that is loaded with chemicals to make the water “safe” for drinking.

We slide into a nice hot shower and our skin pores open wide and say “ahh” to things like chlorine, herbicides, pesticides and pharmaceutical drugs.  On top of that, we use synthetic, toxic chemicals in our hair care, skin care and even our dental products.

Then adding insult to injury, we climb into our car or onto a train for the morning commute and once more we are bombarded by chemicals.

It’s enough to make you want to stay under the covers because…

Many of the chemicals we breathe in and slather on can not be recognized or metabolized by our body.  Unchecked, this can lead to Toxic Burden.

A key factor in reaching optimal health, longevity and weight control is prevention by not doing the unhealthy things.  On a physical level, this includes reducing our toxic load in order to support optimal immunity, organ health and cellular function so that we are more resilient to stress and inflammation.

The three easiest areas to reduce daily toxins are

food, personal care and cleaning products.

When it comes to food, think CLEAN.

It’s great to eat right, begin now to upgrade your food choices. Look for…

  • Grass Fed, Grass Finished – the only way you can get better is if you raise your own herd.
  • No Hormone or Anti-biotics – there is a saying, you are what you eat eats.  Some scientists think that rampant hormone use is what is causing such high numbers of reproductive disorders, like man boobs and early onset puberty.
  • Organic, Non-GMO and Local – check out your local farmers market, join a CSA or even grow your own.

When it comes to skin and hair care, think FREE.

  • Remove toxic skin and hair care products from your home.
  • Look for and choose products that are free of the chemicals listed in the image at the top.  I use a fluoride free, essential oil based toothpaste, skin and hair care.
  • Subscribe to EWG, Environment Working Group, newsletter. This is a secret weapon for reducing daily toxic burden.

When it comes cleaning the house, think GREEN.

All it takes is a few simple items and spectacular essential oils and you will have the cleanest, best smelling and healthiest home on the block.

Eco-friendly natural cleaners. Vinegar baking soda salt lemon and essential oil. Homemade green cleaning on white background.

Leaving a healthy legacy is more important than having a healthy legacy.

Make an intention to leave a healthy legacy, regardless of the legacy passed to you.  Because as we build a legacy for optimal health, through our actions we become healthier by modeling healthy choices for our family, children and community.  We can actually undo and allow the body to restore a great deal of wellness just by changing our actions.

There are three fundamental steps for creating a healthier, more vibrant you so you will have a healthy legacy.

  • Remember, the foundation of optimal health and wellness begins with the food we eat.
  • Proper food, aka fuel, for our body allows us to let go of insane, grueling workouts so we can exercise appropriately, in order to maintain a healthy weight.
  • The essential key to anti-aging, longevity and vitality is appropriate sleep and rest.  It is when we sleep that our cells repair, our energy restores and our organs rejuvenate.

The forth step, reducing your toxic load, is a powerful way to change the world because you are showing your family, children and friends a gentler, more effective and sustainable way to live.

Tell me…

What simple, easy action will you take this week to reduce your toxic load?

Dijon Corn Salad

Because of garden bounty, summer is a really great time to clean up our diets, but let’s face it…summer is also a time we want quick, easy and scrumptious food

Did you know that you can have both?

You can easily impress your family and friends…and sneak in something really healthy.

Dijon Corn Salad

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Baby Arugula, Spinach or other tender leafy green of your choice
  • 2 Cups Raw or Cooked Corn (I have done it both ways and prefer cooked)
  • 1/2 Cup Organic Cherry or Grape Tomatoes (go ahead and dice your Heirloom Tomatoes if that is what you have)
  • 2 Tablespoons Dijon Mustard
  • 1 Teaspoon Local Honey
  • Juice of 1/2 Lemon
  • Sea Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions

  • Cut corn from the cob.
  • Cut cherry tomatoes in half.
  • Place corn and tomatoes in large mixing bowl.
  • Combine mustard, honey, and lemon juice in medium mixing bowl.
  • Pour over corn and tomatoes and gently fold until dressing is evenly distributed.
  • Place arugula in large bowl.
  • Layer corn and tomatoes on top.
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

Recipe notes…

Serves 2 as a main dish and serves many as a side dish and is best served room temperature. It can also be easily doubled.

I’ve shared this delightful dish at 1 cook out, 1 dinner party and 1 party I hosted myself in the last month.  Each time, there were no left overs and no one, not one single person thought they were eating ‘healthy’ food.

I use local, organic corn from my CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).  I don’t always have local, organic cherry tomatoes, but I can pick up organic at the grocery and I get the triple washed, organic baby arugula to make things even easier.

You will find this recipe in the transition phase of my Summer Detox.  Being healthy isn’t about deprivation…it is more about decadence and giving your body delicious and nourishing foods!
